Material Type:

1941
Notes:

The Mouritz edition gives the date and place of publication of this text as London 1946. However, the text is in the 1942 Dutton (U.S.) edition and appears also in the Chaterson edition (red linen covers) that is understood to have been published from pages imported from the U.S.A during the war. In this Chaterson edition, which states "printed in the U.S.A.", there is no date of publication, designation of the edition or printing history. However the advertising page includes a reference to The Universal Constant in Living, published in 1941, and the address given at the end of the "Preface to the New Edition" is Hotel Braemore, Boston, Massachussets - Alexander's base for much of his stay in America.

Jean Fischer comments that Alexander wrote a new preface for Man's Supreme Inheritance in 1941, the year that The Universal Constant in Living was published and that Chaterson brought out their first editions of  Alexander's earlier books to coincide with the publication of UCL. He also notes that the UK publication rights for Alexanders' books were transferred from Methuen Ltd. to Chaterson on 1st September 1941.  All these point to 1941 as being the year in which Alexander wrote the "New Preface", and such difference as there are between the text in the Mouritz edition and that in the 1942 edition(s) are trivial enough to be ignored.
